Do You Know What It Really Costs You to Drive?
Many rideshare and delivery drivers know how much they earn each day, but have little or no idea what it actually costs them to earn that money. Fuel or charging is only part of the picture. Insurance, depreciation, maintenance, tires, vehicle payments or rentals, subscriptions, cleaning, unexpected repairs, downtime, and many other expenses can quietly reduce what you’re really making.
ESW Rideshare True Operating Cost is a free tool designed to help you put those costs together and estimate your true operating cost per mile. Start with a quick estimate, or go deeper with a detailed analysis to get a clearer picture of what your rideshare or delivery work is actually costing you—and how much of your earnings you may really be keeping.
This is a free web app created by me, Ed Silva, a veteran rideshare and delivery driver since 2017, with more than 9 years of experience and over 29,000 rides completed.
The Analysis Report May Be the Most Valuable Part
Besides discovering your true operating cost, one of the most eye-opening parts of this calculator is the personalized Analysis Report you can download when you’re finished.
I’ve been driving rideshare full-time for more than nine years, and while researching and building this calculator, I went deep down the rabbit hole—and even I discovered things I hadn’t fully considered. It was an eye-opener, and I believe this report can completely change the way you look at your rideshare business.
Take a few minutes and enter your information. Quick Mode will give you a good starting point, but the more accurate and detailed your information is, the more useful your analysis will be.
Best of all, it’s completely free, and your financial information stays private on your device. I don’t receive it, and it isn’t transmitted anywhere.
Run your numbers. Download your report. You may be surprised by what your own numbers have to tell you.
If you find this app—or any of my other free web apps—helpful, please consider supporting my work by buying me a coffee. Your support is truly appreciated and helps me continue creating and improving free tools like this for others to use.

A well-informed driver community makes smarter choices. Know your numbers, skip the low offers, and cherry-pick the rides that make financial sense. When drivers stop saying yes to bad offers, the message is clear: our time and miles have value.

What does rideshare driving really cost you?
Build a private operating-cost profile for one vehicle and estimate your cost per mile, hour, day, week, month, and year.
Start with the essentials
Get a useful first estimate, then improve it with Detailed Mode.
Improve the estimate
Add only the categories that apply to you.
Paid vs. empty business miles
Vehicle financing & arrangement details
Insurance & TNC coverage
Fuel & energy details
Gasoline or conventional hybrid: your primary fuel cost is calculated from the MPG and gasoline price entered in Quick Mode. No EV charging information is needed.
These charging fields are only for vehicles that plug in: battery-electric vehicles and plug-in hybrids. They refine the efficiency method. If you selected actual charging expenses in Quick Mode, your real charging spending is used instead.
Maintenance, tires & cleaning
Add recurring expenses using the frequency that matches real life. Mileage-based entries are converted automatically.
Apps, subscriptions & business overhead
Examples can also include separately paid roadside-assistance memberships, unreimbursed business parking/tolls, business phone/data portions, or other recurring operating overhead. Do not enter an expense here if it is already included in insurance, fuel/charging, maintenance, a rental/lease payment, or another section.
Registration, taxes & required operating fees
Ordinary personal driver-license renewal is usually not a vehicle operating cost. If you pay for a special chauffeur, for-hire, TNC, or similar credential specifically for this work, you can add that fee here. If your state charges a large one-time title or acquisition tax when you buy the vehicle, do not automatically treat the whole amount as a recurring annual fee; avoid entering it again if your vehicle-value/depreciation assumptions already reflect that acquisition cost.
Emergency, repair & contingency reserves
Downtime & lost earning capacity
Tax planning — optional and separate
Estimated cost profile
Profitability estimate
Save, compare & understand your work
Using multiple vehicles? Keep one vehicle in this calculator at a time. Export a backup or analysis report for the current vehicle before replacing its data with another vehicle. The analysis report is a readable text file that includes your entries, calculated results, explanations, and items worth reviewing.
Important
This tool provides educational estimates only. Actual operating costs vary by vehicle, market, driving pattern, insurance, maintenance history, taxes, and other circumstances. Tax and legal treatment may differ from economic operating cost. Consult a qualified tax professional, accountant, insurance professional, or attorney for advice specific to your situation.
Before You Go…
Don’t forget to download your Personal Analysis Report. Your numbers tell a much bigger story than just your cost per mile, and the report turns them into practical, easy-to-understand insights about your rideshare or delivery business.
It’s also a good idea to download a backup of your data. If you ever clear your browser, change devices, or lose your saved information for any reason, you can use that backup to restore it without having to enter everything again.
Scroll up to your results to download your Analysis Report and save a backup before you leave.
